Deep within the enchanting rolling hills, resided a young shepherd. His existence was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His main role was to look after his flock of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the wind through the solo tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day upon day, guarding his charges instilled in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were the occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. On one such day out of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.
Tales of predators hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy chose to leveraged this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One day he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy giggled at the confusion on their faces. This prank persisted for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf actually charge at the flock. The shepherd boy ran for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the significance of honesty, the consequences of lying and here the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
